Rail Cross-Section for Sliding Assemblies
 

A drawer slide profile has to accommodate the movement of one rail inside another. For ball-bearing designs, the cross-section commonly contains curved or recessed running tracks where the bearing elements travel.

The forming sequence is therefore developed around the functional geometry of the rail rather than simply creating a folded channel.

Mounting Holes & Rail End Processing

Drawer slide rails usually require holes or slots for attachment to the cabinet and drawer. Their locations can vary according to the mounting system and extension length.

An inline punching unit can prepare these openings during continuous production. Servo feeding allows the punching position to follow the programmed distance between holes.

The punching sequence can be positioned before forming when the hole is located on a relatively flat portion of the strip. For more complicated end features, an additional downstream punching or cutting station can be incorporated.

 

Two-Section & Three-Section Drawer Slides

Different extension mechanisms require different rail combinations.

Two-Section Slides

A two-section slide generally uses an outer member and an inner member. The outer rail attaches to the cabinet, while the inner rail connects to the drawer. The two profiles need compatible running surfaces and controlled clearance.

Three-Section Slides

A three-section telescopic slide adds an intermediate rail between the cabinet and drawer members. This configuration allows greater extension and requires three complementary cross-sections.
